Meet The Crew

The Captains

Captain Bob’s sailing journey began as a young boy in 1972 on Barnegat Bay, New Jersey. He fell in love with the stunning Maine coast while working aboard several Maine schooners, including the Angelique, Appledore, Mary Day, and Surprise. Bob has owned and chartered numerous sailboats, many along the picturesque Maine coast.

Captain Abby discovered her love for sailing during college when she embarked on a nine-week semester at sea, navigating the Caribbean and the East Coast aboard The Spirit of Massachusetts. Abby and Bob have since taken numerous sailing courses together, with the pinnacle being an offshore training program in 2016. This program covered 1,600 miles from Svalbard to Iceland in the Norwegian Sea aboard Mahina Tiare III, a Hallberg-Rassy 45′ sloop.

Both Abby and Bob hold U.S. Coast Guard Master’s Licenses with towing and sailing auxiliary endorsements. They have owned and sailed Mistress since 2014, finding deep joy in sharing their boat and sailing experiences with all who come aboard. When their schedules align, Abby and Bob work together, offering the unique experience of two captains for the price of one.

Growing up in a sailing family, Captain Don Brunton started cruising the New England coast as a child. In 1993, he embarked on a remarkable journey with his wife, Malu, and their two-year-old daughter, Isabella, sailing from Portland, Maine, to Southern Brazil aboard a 22-foot sloop. Over thirty years, they made their home on the picturesque island of Ilhabela, Brazil. There, Captain Don and Malu built three catamarans and operated charter services between Rio and Ilhabela.

Captain Don has completed five major ocean crossings (two with his wife and daughter, Malu and Isabella), spent 17 years with the Bering Sea fishing fleet, and holds an impressive array of maritime licenses: a 200-ton Captain’s license with sail endorsement, a 1,600-ton commercial fishing Master’s endorsement, a 4,000-hp Designated Duty Engineer’s License, and an Auxiliary Towing endorsement. He is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and German.
