The Boat

The sailing vessel Tortola is a 50-foot, high-latitude cutter sloop designed by Dutch/Brazilian architect Thierry Stump. Known for crafting vessels that brave the “Roaring 60’s” of the Southern Oceans and endure Antarctic winters, Stump’s designs are revered by elite mariners. Built on the shores of Southern Brazil, Tortola accommodates 13 passengers and sleeps 8 comfortably. Photos of Tortola can be found in the gallery on the Boats & Crew webpage and throughout the website.

Meet the Crew

Growing up in a sailing family, Captain Don Brunton started cruising the New England coast as a child. In 1993, he embarked on a remarkable journey with his wife, Malu, and their two-year-old daughter, Isabella, sailing from Portland, Maine, to Southern Brazil aboard a 22-foot sloop. Over thirty years, they made their home on the picturesque island of Ilhabela, Brazil. There, Captain Don and Malu built three catamarans and operated charter services between Rio and Ilhabela.

Captain Don has completed five major ocean crossings (two with his wife and daughter, Malu and Isabella), spent 17 years with the Bering Sea fishing fleet, and holds an impressive array of maritime licenses: a 200-ton Captain’s license with sail endorsement, a 1,600-ton commercial fishing Master’s endorsement, a 4,000-hp Designated Duty Engineer’s License, and an Auxiliary Towing endorsement. He is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and German.

From a young age, Malu Brunton dreamed of sailing the ocean. When her husband, Don, bought a small sailboat named ‘Impossible Dream,’ she embraced the opportunity. With their two-year-old daughter, they set sail from Maine to Ilhabela, Brazil. There, Malu founded one of Brazil’s premier programs aimed at introducing underprivileged kids to the performing arts. She has since undertaken two trans-oceanic voyages and managed charter businesses in Brazil.  Malu is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, and also speaks some French. Malu is known for being an exceptionally gracious and engaging hostess on every sailing adventure.
